Born in 1974, Barry McGlashan was educated in Aberdeen. In 1996 he graduated from Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen with first class honours, and he taught there between 1998 and 2000 before leaving to pursue painting full time. His work has been displayed in numerous exhibitions in Scotland and North America, including the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, the Aberdeen Art Gallery and the Scottish Society in New York. He has won several awards and scholarships, including the Hector Memorial Prize, the Macallan Award from the Royal Scottish Academy and the Cuthbert Award from the Royal Glasgow Intitute. After receiving the Alastair Salvesen Scholarship in 2001, he spent three months travelling in the United States, and since then his fascination with small town America has continued to influence his work. His work has been described as “cinematic and intimate, full of affection for the rural communities and expansive landscapes he is drawn to”.

The critic Vivienne DuBourdieu has written of his work that; ‘Mysteries and the sense of being alone are powerful motifs in McGlashan’s paintings. He has the heart of a wanderer.’ The sense of ambiguity and solitariness in his paintings are reinforced by his choice of subject matter and method of working.
