This screenprint by Simon Laurie uses bright colours to emphasize the outlines of ancient and modern structures on the island. Typical of Simon’s style, this piece utilizes a stylized depiction of the subject using outlines and flattened perspectives, against a simple background, that frames the piece.

As the title suggests, the dominant colour is pink, though there is a wide range of shades on display which provides a strong contrast. A bright salmon pink square, partially framed in purple, dominates the lower part of the picture: this square contains smaller orange and cerise squares that form a background to several silhouettes, including a church with steeple and a simple house. To their right a water tower outlined in red and a turquoise flag sit next to a rectangle with the letters “INI” written in red. The sharp angles of these forms contrast with the set of three rings – the larger in purple, and the smaller two in red. The two V-shapes nearby them may represent birds. The bands of lilac, purple and green along the top of the piece suggest a horizon.

Born in Glasgow in 1964, Simon Laurie studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1982 to 1987. He usually works in acrylics, using the bright colours to create still-lives and stylized landscapes, often depicting Scottish island and coastal scenes. He has won a number of awards, and his work is featured in several public collections, including the Aberdeen Art Gallery.
