This piece depicts the artist’s garden in France: a white chair under a lime tree where Rothchild and her husband would eat their meals. This elaborate screen-print was produced with numerous colours and seventeen different screens.

Judith Rothchild was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and trained in Vienna and Rhode Island - studying at Sarah Lawrence College before attending the Rhode Island School of Design. She now lives and works in a village in the Midi in France. She and her husband Mark have a small vineyard, and when not pruning or harvesting she paints. Although she used to paint still life and wild landscapes, Judith began painting formal gardens in 1976 and has come to paint her own garden many times over.

"Every year I produce two or three editions of screenprints in my studio based on my drawings in pastel.. . The 'Chaise Blanche' was printed with seventeen screens in twenty one colours. The original pastel was drawn at our little house in the vine-yard in the Languedoc region of France. The white chairs are an essential part of of opur summer life as all our meals are taken outside under the shade of the lime tree."

Rothchild has held over 30 solo exhibitions throughout the United States, France, Switzerland, Britain and Spain. She produces screen prints in her own atelier: since 1996 she has been worked with in mezzotint to produce individual prints producing individual prints. In addition, she has produced a number of books which have been in public collections throughout France and the United States.
