David Cook was born in 1957 in Dunfermline, Fife. Following an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, he enrolled in Duncan of Jordanstone College, Dundee. Whilst studying he received several awards, including first prize at the annual student show at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1983, and he also travelled extensively across France, the Low Countries and Cyprus. His work has been featured in exhibits throughout Britain and North America and is also held in collections belonging to the Scottish Art Council and the Contemporary Art Society. Cook has received three Scottish Arts Council Awards. The natural world provides the subject matter for much of his artistic output. He has travelled regularly in for this purpose to, for example, the Balearics, Turkey and southern Africa. He currently lives in Seagreens on the east coast of Scotland, where the rugged and isolated landscape serves as a major inspiration for his paintings.
