The dockyards of Leith in Edinburgh are a common theme for Jennifer Thomson. This work is typical of her upbeat, light-hearted approach to artwork. The choice of acrylics allows the artist to use bright colours and bold textures to bring a particular cheer to the scene.

There is a remarkable degree of detail for a piece this size; with each brick being painted individually, each a different shade in order to convey the quality of the stone by the harbour. The expressions of the two men standing over the railing are carefully delineated, with individual features like eyes, facial hair and the cigarette in one mans hand all distinguishable. The boat is particularly detailed with the inclusion of wooden planks, seats and writing along the prow. Interestingly, the focus of the scene is not on the human figures or the boat chained to the wall, both of which are on the periphery: instead, the artist has focused on conveying the entire scene.

Born in 1969, Jennifer Thomson is a graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art and the recipient of several awards, including the Russell and Aitken Award, the Macmillan Prize and the Post Office Purchase Award. She taught Art at Madras College in St Andrews, Fife until 1998 before pursuing a career as a full-time artist. She has had several exhibitions in Edinburgh and London and her paintings are in the permanent collections of The City Arts Centre and The Royal Bank of Scotland. She draws inspiration from her family life and the people and places around her. Her two children are often featured in her compositions.
