NHS Lothian provides a comprehensive range of primary, community-based and acute hospital services for the second largest residential population in Scotland.

We believe creativity, arts and design should be woven into all our work as there is good evidence that these have a positive effect on wellbeing and health.

This painting shows three birds (two large and one very small) in grey/blue silhouette on a perch or branch with leaves at one end, against a background divided almost equally between pale blue and brick-red. A dark section at the left-hand edge forms an important counter-weight to the image of the birds being off-centre to the right.

The closeness of the miniature, grey dove to the larger, white fantailed dove suggests a maternal relationship. Nestled into the breast, the suspected squab's display of intimacy could be perceived as nurturing and protective.

The blue dove stands at a slight distance, placed noticeably in front of the block-white background. This could be a stock dove, recognisable by their bottle-green collars. This contrast exaggerates the segregation between them, hinting at the watchful presence of an outsider, though it does not deter one from the notion that this could be the doting father, protecting his loves ones from afar.

Jennifer Dack went to Edinburgh College of Art and currently resides with her family in Wiltshire, England.
