NHS Lothian provides a comprehensive range of primary, community-based and acute hospital services for the second largest residential population in Scotland.

We believe creativity, arts and design should be woven into all our work as there is good evidence that these have a positive effect on wellbeing and health.

In an impressionistic manner Theresa Flynn depicts the main front of a cathedral. From the architectural style, terrain and weather we would seem to be in foreign climes - the artist was an intrepid traveller and painted many of the sights she saw abroad.

In her artist statement on the RSW website Theresa Flynn stated, "Foreign travel has given ample scope for landscape painting abroad as well as Scottish environs. The qualities one strives for are a combination of drawing, colour harmony plus textural variety painting in watercolour and gouache media. Completion of paintings with oil paints also takes a considerable time and a finished work done in two stages. First establishing compositional ideas, secondly returning later with a fresh approach for completion of work both in watercolour and oil painting. Influenced in early years by John Piper."

Theresa Flynn was born in Galashiels in 1923. During the Second World War she worked at Bletchley Park in codebreaking operations. After the war she studied at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1951, and then taught art in schools in Edinburgh and Glasgow. She was elected to professional membership of Visual Arts Scotland in 1963 and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1969, and exhibited widely throughout Scotland. She died in 2009.
