NHS Lothian provides a comprehensive range of primary, community-based and acute hospital services for the second largest residential population in Scotland.

We believe creativity, arts and design should be woven into all our work as there is good evidence that these have a positive effect on wellbeing and health.

Philip Duthie's abstract and semi-abstract paintings are inspired by his interpretation of the Scottish landscape. His works in the NHS Lothian Collection use a background of strong primary colours. Philip's recent style is moving towards a less abstract treatment, and he is currently working on a series of very large paintings called 'New Horizons', inspired by the quality of light where the sea meets the sky and the land. His subjects are coastal scenes, mainly in East Lothian and the Hebrides, and the series will be completed in 2014.

Philip Duthie was born in Aberdeen in 1957 and now lives in Edinburgh. He studied in Aberdeen at Gray's School of Art - now part of Robert Gordon University - and the University purchased two of his early paintings. In 1983 Philip won a Scottish Arts Council Young Artists bursary, and in 1989 was awarded an Amsterdam Studio bursary to spend a year living and painting in The Netherlands. He was subsequently appointed artist in residence at the Grizedale Forest in Cumbria.

His work is in many public and corporate collections. He has exhibited in the UK, Croatia and the USA, and has held solo exhibitions in the UK, Ireland, and Denmark.
