NHS Lothian provides a comprehensive range of primary, community-based and acute hospital services for the second largest residential population in Scotland.

We believe creativity, arts and design should be woven into all our work as there is good evidence that these have a positive effect on wellbeing and health.

Dennis Buchan was born in 1937 in Arbroath and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. After teaching in various schools, he returned to Dundee as a lecturer. Dennis has studied abroad in New York, Barcelona, Belgium & Holland. He is now a member of the Royal Scottish Academy.

His work fuses Scottish Colourist tradition with more modern, abstract expressionism and pop art, and can be seen in collections in the UK and the USA. They take their inspiration from landscapes and seascapes, using everyday objects to create bold juxtapositions of form and colour.

Speaking about his work in an exhibition in Forfar in 2005, Dennis said "They are about living - emotional responses to environments and situations, always more romantic in stimulus than intellectual. Colour relationships, inspired by music, movement and change of space all have their place in the development of the pictorial image. The end products are certainly not 'illustrations', but rather compilations. They are not stories, but evocative manifestations - they are about living and reacting."
