'Hill Street' is a work by the Scottish artist Geoffrey Uglow. At first glance, when looking at the architectural like forms and urban colour palette, the work is suggestive of a street or city scene. Geoffrey's work as a painter has concentrated on representing his immediate surroundings and 'Hill Street' is indeed representative of a quite gritty Glasgow city scene. The work has been created using an intricate abstract language that seems to be quite reliant on colour, texture and form. The artist displays a masterly command of oil paint to build a richly gestural and textural work.

The viewer's attention is caught by the rectangular green shapes at the forefront of the work. These appear to be representative of street gardens and add a sense of depth when viewing the work. An art historical reference that Geoffrey's work brings to mind is that of the textural work by the abstract painter Frank Auerbach. Geoffrey's textural painting seems vaguely similar to Auerbach's London cityscapes that were painted in the 1980s. The small scale lends an intimate nature to the work and the overall atmosphere that the artist has created is one that is quite dark and overcast.

Geoffrey Uglow trained at Glasgow School of Art. His work has concentrated on the harsh Glasgow urban landscape. After graduating he won a scholarship to the British School in Rome.
