Vincent Butler's intricate drawing of the basket crowned with fruit is a beautiful depiction of the seasonal fruit, reminding us of harvest and domesticity. However, the artist pays much more attention to the representational side of the chosen object rather than its meaning – as shown in detailed weaving of the basket.

Vincent Butler is the winner of the Art in Healthcare Award - selected at the Royal Scottish Academy Open exhibition in July 2016.

Born in Manchester in 1933, Vincent Butler studied at the Manchester College of Art, the Edinburgh College of Art and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan. In 1933 he became a tutor at the Edinburgh College of Art, specializing in Modelling from Life and casting in bronze, from where he retired in 1989 to dedicate himself to full time sculpture.

He has exhibited widely in various parts of the UK and his works may been seen presently at the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh and at Cyril Gerber Fine Art in Glasgow. Although his art practice was principally sculpture, he was always an enthusiastic draughtsman and apart from producing hundreds of drawings from the human figure, he always carried a sketchbook with him on his many travels - Basket of Fruit was created in Sicily.

The National Portrait Gallery has four of Butler's bronze busts in their permanent collection.
