This piece depicts of a wooden boat or ark viewed from the stern, upon a background of dark blue that forms the sea and light blue that forms the sky. A close inspection of the piece reveals that it uses layers of colours and quick brush strokes to produce energy in the sky. Alice likes to build layered surfaces using simple colours with varied line and texture: she layers paints, then scores into the paint while drying to create texture: for example, in this piece the artist has used scoring to create patterns in the hull of the ark.

This work was inspired by the Aegean Sea, which the artist visited on a trip to Turkey. She says, "There are lots of stories and legends connected with the sea which brought me to a imagine a mysterious vessel on a timeless journey".

Alice's artworks frequently comprise a central, bold architectural structure from from which whimsical, curious imagery can emerge. The artist is inspired by the myths and mysteries that lurk above and beneath the water's surface that have provided amazing stories for centuries.

Alice Shannon was born in 1968 graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College in Aberdeen in 1990. She has worked in Art Therapy with adults with physical disability in Broughty Ferry, and has exhibited widely around Scotland.
