Foxflag

Foxflag by Lindsay Grant
Woodcut
1996
70 x 102 cm

Reg. Number: P700

In this colourful woodcut print Lindsay has employed a very graphical design and symbolic animal forms to represent difficulties in human relationships. The precarious position of the bird on the fast-moving fox illustrates the potential difficulties in a relationship between two people, for example girlfriend and boyfriend, mother and daughter or employer and employee.

According to the artist, "you're riding along thinking you're doing fine but it's so easy to lose your balance or fall out of synch and fall apart".

The grain of the wooden ground is very evident in this artwork and gives a feeling of aliveness and character to the work. The fox fur is chiselled in bold strokes, following the sinuous form of the fox's body. The fox looks out of the picture, directly at the viewer, one half of its face in light, while in the other half tears fall from the eye, alluding to the turbulent nature of the relationship.
