Fly Fishing by Alice Shannon
Oil on board
1996
135 x 118 cm

Reg. Number: P751

Print Label Print Label

This oil on board work named typically reflects Alice Shannon’s interests in aquatic life. It comprises a bowl-like structure on the water from which whimsical, curious imagery seems to emerge. Alice built up many layered surfaces using simple colours with varied line and texture to describe two colourful fishing flies above the bowl and numerous fantastic indistinguishable lives beneath the water’s surface. The work is full of romantic and whimsical imagination.

"The myths and mysteries that lurk above and beneath the water's surface have provided amazing stories for centuries. They give artists huge scope for painting material with the colours and habits of sea birds and aquatic life. Fly-fishing is a monument to the search for the secrets of the sea life past and present, and also a symbolic bid for its conservation."

Alice Shannon was born in 1968 and graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College in Aberdeen in 1990. She has worked in Art Therapy with adults with physical disability in Broughty Ferry, and has exhibited widely around Scotland.
