This is a beautiful still life pastel painting, where the table and the cat between the two candles take centre stage. However, the light gently draws our gaze towards the woman sitting on the left and immediately we are intrigued as to what her thoughts are and what is going on at that moment in time - the viewer is left wondering if the woman is perhaps waiting for someone else as two cups of coffee or tea might suggest. The atmosphere and colours evoke a melancholic feel,in contrast to the woman's alert and thoughtful expression. It seems that she is having a simple tea break between her chores.

Winifred Fergus studied drawing and painting at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, graduating in 1984.Since then she has exhibited widely and she is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy. She has won a number of awards including the Shell Expro Award —Aberdeen Artists Society, John Murray Thomson Award — Royal Scottish Academy and the Maude Gemmel Hutchison Prize — Royal Scottish Academy.

She has works in the public collections of Robert Gordon University— Aberdeen, Grampian Hospitals Arts Trust, Aberdeen Art Gallery, Edinburgh Hospitals Art Trust and in private collections throughout the UK and worldwide.

Winifred’s work is a mixture of figurative and still life subjects. More recently she has been focussing on wildlife paintings, choosing to paint birds and animals that are common to her environment in rural Aberdeenshire. She aims to portray her subjects in a sensitive, unsentimental way.
