This bold and colourful still life shows the influence of Matisse's aesthetic on Wiszniewski, whose work is also informed conceptually by post-modern artists such as Bruce McLean and Gilbert & George.

In this acrylic painting two large, vibrant green pears stand upright on a strangely bulbous pedestal-style fruit bowl. A vibrant orange background sings against a cobalt blue table top, and a yellow lemon and dark green lime sit poised at opposite ends of the table, balancing the two pears above. Heavy black outlines define each area of the scene. Behind, is a mysterious black backdrop, in which simple geometric forms are outlined. The large pale yellow slice of lemon cuts diagonally behind the table giving a dynamic feel to the image.

Adrian Wiszniewski was born in 1958 in Glasgow and studied Architecture at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow and then Painting at the Glasgow School of Art. He quickly became a leading figure in Scottish painting and is best known for his large-scale figurative works. He made his name as one of the "New Glasgow Boys", a group of young artists from Glasgow School of Art who led a revival of figurative painting in Scotland during the 1980s.
