John Bellany
Madonna of the Bass Rock
watercolour, 90 x 71 cm
1997
Reg. No: P853
John Bellany CBE (1942-2013) is recognised as one of the most influential post-war Scottish artists. Born into a family of fishermen and boat builders in Port Seton, and coming to prominence in the 1960s with allegorical pieces depicting fishing communities, life by the coast has long influenced his work. This watercolour depicts the Bass Rock off the coast of North Berwick, which showcases the artist's vigorous approach to figurative art.
